Le jour tombait dans le vaste atelier par la baie ouverte du plafond.
C'etait un grand carre de lumiere eclatante et bleue, un trou clair
sur un infini lointain d'azur, ou passaient, rapides, des vols
d'oiseaux.
Mais a peine entree dans la haute piece severe et drapee, la clarte
joyeuse du ciel s'attenuait, devenait douce, s'endormait sur les
etoffes, allait mourir dans les portieres, eclairait a peine les coins
sombres ou, seuls, les cadres d'or s'allumaient comme des feux. La
paix et le sommeil semblaient emprisonnes la dedans, la paix des
maisons d'artistes ou l'ame humaine a travaille. En ces murs que la
pensee habite, ou la pensee s'agite, s'epuise en des efforts violents,
il semble que tout soit las, accable, des qu'elle s'apaise. Tout
semble mort apres ces crises de vie; et tout repose, les meubles, les
etoffes, les grands personnages inacheves sur les toiles, comme si le
logis entier avait souffert de la fatigue du maitre, avait peine avec
lui, prenant part, tous les jours, a sa lutte recommencee. Une
